If he isn't already, Chris Hemsworth may very well be on his way to becoming the premier action hero of this generation, something we witnessed in full flight in the newest Netflix action release Extraction. In Extraction we see Hemsworth as (Tyler Rake) a fearless black market mercenary embarking on the deadliest extraction of his career when he’s enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. In the film there is a rivalry between Ovi Mahajan Sr. and Amir Asif for top crime boss in the region. Asif takes this rivalry to the next level when when he kidnaps Ovi Jr the son of Ovi Sr. Ovi Sr then pressures his second in command (Saju) to get his son back at any cost, even threatening the family of Saju if he is to fail. Saju ultimately seeks the services of the top mercenary group that specializes in extractions of high value targets, and Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) happens to be the best of this group.
Extraction is action packed and when the action begins it’s non stop fire fights and hand to hand combat. Hemsworth’s character channels his inner Captain America as he demolishes enemy hostiles in the streets of Bangladesh as he attempts to get Ovi Jr to the extraction point. I bring up Captain America because the combat choreography is very similar to what you would find in a Captain America film; just move over the top. This may be by design as the Russo brothers who conceptualized and directed two Captain America films as well as two Avengers films, also played a key role in the creation of this film with Joe Russo penning the screenplay.
The film has a surprising emotional element with Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) battling inner demons and developing a relationship with Ovi Jr and begins to genuinely care for his well-being. Tyler Rake also has a close relationship with Nik Khan who recruited Rake for the mission who also acts as his handler and coordinates the logistics of the mission. All in all, Extraction is a fun watch, full of action with enough depth for you to connect and invest in the characters. The action is a bit over the top and a bit unrealistic as with most action films. With that being said this is a very solid film distributed by Netflix with a budget and execution that was fit for the big screen.
