The gaming industry is reacting to tragic news following the death of Vince Zampella, a pioneering developer best known for his role in shaping some of the most influential video game franchises of the last two decades. Zampella was killed Sunday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on Angeles Crest Highway in Southern California. He was 55.
Zampella was a former CEO of Infinity Ward, the studio behind the blockbuster Call of Duty franchise. The series went on to become one of the best-selling entertainment properties of all time, redefining first-person shooters and online multiplayer gaming.

In 2010, Zampella co-founded Respawn
Entertainment, which later produced major titles including Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Respawn was acquired by Electronic Arts in 2017, where Zampella continued to oversee major studio initiatives and contributed to EA’s broader portfolio, including development efforts tied to the Battlefield franchise.
According to authorities, the crash occurred just north of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains. The vehicle reportedly veered off the road, struck a concrete barrier, and caught fire. Further details surrounding the cause of the crash have not yet been released.
Zampella’s passing marks a significant loss for the video game community. His influence on modern game design, studio leadership, and blockbuster franchise development remains deeply embedded in the industry.
We will continue to follow updates as more information becomes available.
