CinemaCon 2026: Sony recap With Bold Vision, Major Reveals, and Crowd-Stopping Moments

By Klep Napier | Wearecritix.com

First things first. Before we dive into our CinemaCon 2026 Sony recap, we have to acknowledge how Cinema United kept the momentum rolling as Sony Pictures took the stage inside Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, delivering one of the most talked-about presentations of the event so far. Blending major franchise reveals, industry-wide challenges, surprise appearances, and exclusive footage, Sony did more than preview a slate. They made a statement about the future of theatrical moviegoing.

A Statement Before the Spectacle: CinemaCon 2026 Sony recap

Leading the presentation was Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, who set the tone immediately with a message directed straight at theater owners.

Rothman reportedly acknowledged the challenges theaters are facing, including declining admissions and shifting audience habits, but pushed for a reset built around what became Sony’s defining message at CinemaCon: Longer, Shorter, Cheaper.

Longer theatrical windows Shorter pre-shows Cheaper access for audiences

At one point, Rothman reportedly told exhibitors to “get off the ad crack,” urging theaters to cut down excessive advertising and long pre-show blocks. The moment drew reactions across the room, but the message was clear. Sony is not just investing in films, they are advocating for a better theatrical experience.

A Legacy-Driven Opening

Sony kicked things off with a sizzle reel celebrating its cinematic legacy, reminding the room of its impact with franchises like Spider-Man and Men in Black.

It set the tone for what followed. A slate built on variety, scale, and storytelling. Rothman reportedly emphasized the importance of offering a wide range of films, from PG crowd-pleasers to horror, prestige dramas, animation, and blockbuster event films.

Spider-Man Takes the Emotional Spotlight

One of the most talked-about moments of the presentation centered around Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Tom Holland appeared via pre-recorded projection alongside Rothman, introducing new footage that reportedly leaned heavily into Peter Parker’s emotional isolation. In one described scene, Peter watches from a distance as Ned, no longer remembering him, tries to figure out Spider-Man’s identity, suspecting people like Flash Thompson or even Mr. Harrington.

Sony reportedly emphasized the emotional weight of this next chapter, positioning it as a more personal and grounded continuation of Peter’s story.

Alongside the footage, two new teaser posters were also revealed. One features a close-up of Spider-Man with the reflection of MJ, played by Zendaya, visible in his right eye, reinforcing the emotional disconnect at the heart of the story. The second poster leans into action, showcasing Spidey going up against the red-suited ninja group known as

The Hand, hinting at a more dangerous and grounded threat.

Beyond the Spider-Verse Raises the Stakes

Sony Pictures Animation followed with a major moment as Phil Lord and Chris Miller reportedly presented new footage from Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

The film was confirmed as the final chapter in Miles Morales’ story and is being designed specifically for large-format theatrical screens, including IMAX. It will also utilize a 1.43:1 aspect ratio, marking a first for the franchise.

Reported footage described Miles confronting isolation before coming face to face with Uncle Aaron holding the Prowler mask. Everything about the presentation pointed toward a масштаб, emotionally driven finale built for theaters.

New first-look images from the film were also revealed during the presentation, giving attendees an early glimpse at the visual scale and tone of what’s shaping up to be a massive conclusion.

Jumanji: Open World Brings the Energy

If there was a moment that shifted the room’s energy completely, this was it.

Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, and Jack Black took the stage together, instantly igniting the crowd as Sony officially revealed Jumanji: Open World.

Reported footage showed the game breaking out of the console and into the real world, flipping the franchise’s concept in a bold new way. Alex Wolff returns alongside the core cast, with Johnson, Hart, Black, and Karen Gillan heading into another chaotic adventure.

Set for a December 25, 2026 release, this one felt like a major holiday event in the making.

Horror Expands With Insidious and Resident Evil

Sony also made sure horror fans were fed.

The first trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further was revealed during the presentation, giving attendees a chilling look at the next chapter in the franchise. The film is officially set to hit theaters October 3, 2026, positioning it perfectly for the Halloween season.

Meanwhile, Resident Evil director Zach Cregger took the stage and reportedly described his approach as a stripped-down, character-focused story following a single protagonist from point A to point B. The goal is to make the film accessible even to audiences unfamiliar with the games.

Sony also made it clear they are not playing it safe when it comes to genre and adaptation. It was reported that an R-rated animated Bloodborne film is officially in development, signaling a bold and darker direction for PlayStation adaptations under Sony’s banner. Leaning fully into the haunting tone and brutal world of the game, this project already feels like one aimed directly at core fans while expanding what animated features can look like in theaters.

On the animation side, Sony Pictures Animation also revealed Buds, a new project that reportedly blends irreverent humor with supernatural chaos, continuing the studio’s push into more experimental storytelling. The film ‘BUDS’ is about a plant that broke their biggest rule: “never talk to humans.”

And then there’s Helldivers, with Justin Lin attached, bringing a cinematic adaptation of the popular sci-fi game to life. Reportedly positioned as a large-scale action spectacle, the film is expected to embrace the game’s intense, squad-based warfare and over-the-top energy, adding yet another ambitious piece to Sony’s expanding slate of game-to-screen adaptations.

On that front, it was also reported that The Legend of Zelda has officially wrapped filming and is set to hit theaters on May 7, 2027.

The Social Network Returns With a New Perspective

In one of the most unexpected reveals of the presentation, Sony introduced The Social Reckoning, a follow-up to The Social Network.

Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, the film is described as a thriller centered on a whistleblower taking on Facebook in a David versus Goliath-style story.

The project was presented alongside first-look material for both the cast and the film itself, giving attendees an early sense of its tone and direction. Reportedly, footage included Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg and featured the return of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ signature score, tying the film back to its predecessor while pushing the story into a more intense and modern direction.

A Presentation That Meant Something

What made Sony’s CinemaCon 2026 presentation stand out was not just the announcements, but the intention behind them.

From Rothman’s direct challenge to exhibitors to a slate that spans emotional superhero storytelling, blockbuster spectacle, horror, animation, and prestige drama, Sony delivered a presentation that felt both strategic and necessary.

This was not just about selling movies. It was about reinforcing why theaters matter and what needs to change to keep them thriving.

And judging by the reactions inside the room, Sony may have delivered one of the defining presentations of CinemaCon 2026.
