Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Like most, I am a bit skeptical when any sequel is released, especially a sequel to an animation. Does anyone remember The Little Mermaid II? Exactly. So, I was pleasantly surprised with the originality of Secret Life of Pets 2. Starring Patton Oswalt as Max, Kevin Hart as Snowball, and featuring Harrison Ford as Rooster. TSLP2 followed multiple characters through different storylines that creatively intertwined with one another by the end of the movie. From where we left off in SLP1, we learn that Max and his family have a new, little family member. Which takes some adjusting for Max, but eventually, he becomes obsessed with keeping his new human safe. Captain Snowball, the fiercest superhero around, is off saving a little white kitty with his new companion Daisy. And the rest of the cast is back at home learning how to “be a cat”, which I can say from cat-owner experience, was quite accurate. Wins? An interesting animation sequel that doesn’t harp on jokes from the previous movie and an intriguing storyline that keeps you entertained throughout the entirety of the movie. Losses? There were brief stretches that were a bit slow and it did take some time to connect the various storylines together. Some jokes hit harder than others, but that is normal for a comedy, particularly an animated one. Overall tho I really enjoyed this film. I might not go see it again, but it was a solid rainy afternoon movie to watch at the theater. However, it may have been even better if I could've snuggled with my dog while watching it!
