The Boys Season 5 Review: A Ruthless Endgame That Pulls No Punches

By Klep Napier | Wearecritix.com

Having screened the first seven episodes of The Boys final season, one thing is immediately clear, this is not a victory lap. This is a calculated, blood-soaked march toward the end. Season 5 wastes no time setting the tone, reminding viewers that nothing is sacred and no one is safe. If you thought you had a handle on this world before, think again. These opening episodes do not just raise the stakes, they flip the entire table.

From the jump, the season leans into its darkest instincts yet. There is an overwhelming sense of dread baked into every episode, as if the show is daring you to get comfortable before ripping that comfort away. And it does, repeatedly. Characters are removed from the board in shocking, often brutal fashion, making it clear that attachment is a dangerous game this season. Viewer beware, if you have favorites, you might want to emotionally prepare now.

What is impressive is how the show maintains its signature formula, over the top violence, biting satire, and yes, its infamous brand of explicit chaos, while still evolving narratively. This time around, everything feels more intentional. Every decision, every twist, every loss carries weight. It is no longer just about the spectacle, it is about the consequences. The story is tightening, focusing in on an inevitable end that feels both earned and unpredictable.

Performance wise, this cast is firing on all cylinders. Homelander reaches a new level of instability, delivering a version of the character that is equal parts captivating and deeply unsettling. He is not just the villain anymore, he is a ticking time bomb. Meanwhile, Kimiko, brought to life by Karen Fukuhara, emerges as the emotional core of the season. Her presence grounds the chaos, offering moments of humanity in a story that often feels devoid of it. It is a powerful contrast that elevates the entire narrative.

For longtime fans of the source material, Season 5 continues to carve its own path. The original comic concludes with a brutal unraveling of alliances and a final confrontation that flips the entire premise on its head. But the series has long since diverged, and these episodes confirm that we are heading toward something entirely different. That unpredictability is what makes this final chapter so compelling. You may think you know where it is going, but the show is clearly not interested in following expectations.

And that is where the tension really lives. With only seven episodes seen, we are left on edge, both excited and honestly a little nervous about what is coming next. Because if this stretch proves anything, it is that The Boys is not pulling back, it is pushing forward into something even darker. When we do get our glimpse of the final episode, we will be sure to share our thoughts and help prepare your emotions for whatever hell possibly awaits. The Boys Season 5 premieres April 8 on Prime Video , and this goodbye is shaping up to hurt.
