If you grew up watching A Different World then you already know what that theme song means. It was not just music. It was a feeling. A signal that something special was about to happen on your screen. And now Netflix has made a decision that is going to send an entire generation straight back to their childhood in the best possible way.
Brandy Norwood is singing the theme song for the A Different World revival. And it drops September 24th.
Take a moment with that.
Brandy and Hillman College Were Always Meant to Find Each Other
This is not a random casting decision. This is someone who grew up loving this show the same way the rest of us did getting the opportunity to be a part of its legacy in a way that feels genuinely earned.
"Singing this iconic theme song for A Different World means everything to me," Brandy shared. "It was one of those shows that I had to watch every time it came on. I remember the song and how it made me feel."
That last line says everything. Because that is exactly how we all felt. And now a Grammy Award winning artist who carries that same emotional connection to the original is bringing her voice to the revival. The circle is complete.
What the New Season Looks Like
The revival returns to Hillman College with a new class of students stepping onto campus alongside some very familiar faces coming home where they belong.
At the center of the story is Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. She is the youngest daughter of Whitley and Dwayne Wayne, lovingly sheltered, full of spirit, with a flair for the spotlight and a big heart still figuring out her own path at Hillman. That connection to the original characters alone is enough to make longtime fans emotional before the first episode even begins.
She is joined by a new generation that reflects the full breadth of Black life on campus. Rashida Duvall is a first generation criminal justice major. Shaquille Johnson is a five star athlete choosing between personal ambition and legacy. Amir Rodale is a sharp psychology major who is far better at fixing everyone else's problems than facing his own. Hazel Henry is a church raised small town girl finding out who she is beyond where she came from. And Kojo Achebe is a Ghanaian Nigerian fashion entrepreneur finding the courage to follow his creative vision even when everything around him says otherwise.
These are not just characters. These are people. And the specificity of who they are tells you immediately that A Different World is in very good hands.
The Originals Are Coming Home
Whitley Gilbert. Dwayne Wayne. Freddie Brooks. Ron Johnson.
Jasmine Guy. Kadeem Hardison. Cree Summer. Darryl M. Bell.
They are all coming back. And if you need a moment to process that, take it. We did too.
The Team Behind It All
The creative lineup for this revival is as impressive as the cast. Felicia Pride serves as creator, showrunner and executive producer, bringing a clear and purposeful vision to what Hillman College looks like for a new generation. Debbie Allen, who was instrumental in the original series, is back as both executive producer and director of the premiere episode. Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood round out an executive producing team that understands exactly what this show has always meant and what it needs to be now.
The music supervision comes from Derryck Big Tank Thornton, who worked alongside Brandy to bring the theme to life. This is not a production that cut corners anywhere.
Everything You Need to Know
A Different World returns to Netflix on September 24, 2026. Ten episodes, single camera, half hour format. New episodes will be available to stream from day one.
If you have never seen the original, fix that before September. If you grew up on it, you already know what you are doing on the 24th.
Hillman is calling. Brandy is singing. And a whole new generation is about to find out what we already know.
