“Insecure” star and creator Issa Rae is planning a re-imagining of the 1996 crime heist thriller “Set It Off” which starred Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise.
The F. Gary Gray-directed original followed four friends, fed up with by low-wage jobs and broken by institutional violence, who band to together for a series of bank robberies.
After initial success, the spree ultimately leads to mostly tragic ends. The film scored rave reviews and was a surprise hit, launching several careers in the process.
Syreeta Singleton (“Black Monday”) and Nina Gloster (“Star”) have been hired to pen the script for the new take.
Rae will produce with an eye to star while Montrel McKay will also produce.
