Keanu Reeves to produce John Wick spinoff titled "Ballerina" featuring female lead.
Lionsgate has reportedly already locked in screenwriter/director Len Wiseman to direct this spinoff to the widely successful John Wick franchise. Wiseman is known for his directorial role in the first two films of another female driven action franchise, the "Underworld" series starring Kate Beckinsale. Wiseman also directed "Live Free or Die Hard" the fourth installment to the Bruce Willis led Die Hard franchise, as well as 2012's (Total Recall) starring Kate Beckinsale and Colin Farrell.
Ballerina will center around a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. The film is currently being fast tracked, with a script from Shay Hatten already written, Hatten's resume includes Netflix original (Army of the Dead) and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. The spinoff is set to be produced by the John Wick star Keanu Reeves. The female lead character in the upcoming Ballerina film was apparently glimpsed in Parabellum however no specifics have been given as to who exactly, and it isn’t clear at this point whether Reeves will be in the film, and if so it will most likely be in a cameo capacity. Actress Unity Phelan is listed in the end credits of Parabellum under the character "Ballerina" however she has not been officially cast in the upcoming spinoff.
The film is taking center stage despite Lionsgate ramping up production on John Wick 4, the final chapter. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum has generated just over $323 million worldwide at the box office. It is the highest grossing home entertainment title Lionsgate has released in over five years.
