Kenan Thompson Set to Reboot 80’s Slasher “Sleepaway Camp” With Original Director Robert Hiltzik

Kenan Thompson is taking a bold step into the horror world, and it’s not through comedy skits or late-night laughs. The longtime SNL star announced that his production company, AFA, is developing a brand-new take on the cult classic Sleepaway Camp. What makes this news especially exciting is that Thompson isn’t simply reviving the 1983 slasher he’s bringing back the film’s original creator, Robert Hiltzik, to both write and direct the reboot.

For those who may not know, the original Sleepaway Camp was a low-budget horror film that turned into a cult phenomenon thanks to its unnerving camp setting, memorable kills, and one of the most shocking twist endings in slasher history. Over the years it became a rite of passage for horror fans, spawning multiple sequels and solidifying its place in genre lore. Thompson’s version aims to reintroduce the terror of summer camp to a whole new generation, while still honoring what made the original such a fan favorite.

Hiltzik’s involvement is a huge reassurance for longtime fans. He’s been protective of the Sleepaway Camp legacy for decades, so the fact that he’s chosen to collaborate with Thompson speaks volumes. Reports suggest that he’s excited to deliver something fresh while leaning into the twisted charm of his original vision. This won’t be a lazy cash-in remake it’s shaping up to be a carefully crafted return to Camp Arawak with new surprises lurking behind every tree.

The production team backing the project is stacked as well. Alongside Thompson and AFA partner Johnny Ryan Jr., the film has a lineup of producers and executives who are reportedly committed to giving Hiltzik the creative freedom he’s always wanted for the franchise. While casting and release dates haven’t been revealed yet, the announcement alone has reignited chatter in horror circles. The question now isn’t whether fans are ready for another Sleepaway Camp it’s whether they can handle the “insane new twists” promised.

As someone who’s been covering horror for years, I have to admit this is one of the more exciting reboots on the horizon. A blend of nostalgia, authenticity, and modern energy could be exactly what Sleepaway Camp needs to stand out in today’s crowded horror market. Whether you’re a longtime fan or someone who’s never seen the original, keep your eyes peeled. Summer camp just got scary again, and we’ll be watching closely as this project heads into production.

As always, we’ll be keeping a close eye on this project and will keep our readers updated as more details unfold.
