Few sci-fi films manage to balance spectacle and soul quite like Project Hail Mary. Directed by the filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), the film adapts Andy Weir’s bestselling 2021 novel into a sweeping cinematic journey that blends high-concept science with deeply human emotion. I recently had the chance to experience the film during a special screening at the Boston Museum of Science’s Mugar Omni Theater IMAX Dome, a setting that only amplified the scale and wonder of the story unfolding on screen. What begins as a mystery about survival in deep space gradually unfolds into a heartfelt story about courage, discovery, and the unexpected connections that can form even in the most impossible circumstances.
At the center of the story is Dr. Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, a reluctant astronaut who wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. As his memories slowly return, Grace realizes he has been sent on a desperate mission to save Earth from a cosmic catastrophe threatening all life on the planet. Gosling anchors the entire film with a performance that carries both the emotional weight and scientific curiosity of the narrative. His take on Grace is charming, relatable, and filled with quiet humanity, and many of the film’s best moments come directly from the warmth and vulnerability he brings to the character.
Fans of Andy Weir’s writing will recognize the DNA of his previous work, particularly the grounded scientific approach that made The Martian such a standout adaptation. Project Hail Mary leans heavily into problem-solving, discovery, and the thrill of scientific exploration, allowing audiences to experience the wonder and danger of space through Grace’s perspective. Yet where the film truly distinguishes itself is in its exploration of friendship and empathy across unimaginable distances.
Lord and Miller bring a surprisingly delicate touch to the film’s storytelling, allowing moments of quiet reflection to breathe between the grand sci-fi concepts and visual spectacle. The result is a film that feels just as invested in emotional resonance as it is in interstellar stakes. Visually, the film captures the scale of deep space with breathtaking detail while grounding the narrative in the intimate struggles of one man trying to do the right thing in the face of impossible odds.
Supporting performances help enrich the story’s emotional layers as well. The film features Sandra Hüller, Milly Alcock, and Ken Leung, each contributing to the broader narrative that unfolds through Grace’s recovered memories. These performances help shape the human side of the mission, reminding viewers what’s truly at stake back on Earth while reinforcing the personal sacrifices behind such a monumental journey.
Ultimately, Project Hail Mary is a full-scale sci-fi epic layered with emotional stakes. It’s a story about bravery, self-discovery, and the unexpected friendships that can change everything. Ryan Gosling carries the film on his shoulders for a whopping two and a half hours, pulling at our hearts through courage, curiosity, and an unlikely bond that redefines what it means to stand up, step forward, and take chances in the name of science, kindness, and mankind. And while I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gosling enter the Best Actor conversation next awards season, I have a feeling the film itself will receive even stronger recognition for its storytelling, with serious potential in categories like Best Adapted Screenplay or even Best Picture.
Overall, Project Hail Mary proves that even across the vast emptiness of space, the most powerful force in the universe might just be connection.
